FAQs
About Loxkin
What is LOXKIN?
Loxkin is a UK-made, plant-based wood finish made from British-grown hemp seed oil. It protects, nourishes and enhances wood while supporting healthier indoor environments and more circular material systems.
What does “regenerative” mean in the context of Loxkin?
Loxkin uses UK-grown hemp, a crop that improves soil health and captures carbon as it grows. It offers a renewable alternative to extractive, petrochemical-based finishes.
Is Loxkin a social enterprise?
Yes. Loxkin reinvests a significant portion of its profits into regenerating farms and developing community-based education around sustainable materials and craft.
What makes Loxkin an ethical and sustainable brand?
Loxkin is built on transparent sourcing, non-toxic materials and circular design principles. We are proudly recognised by Social Enterprise UK.
Product & Ingredients
What is Loxkin made from?
100% cold-pressed hemp seed oil, selected for its performance in wood finishing. No solvents, no petrochemicals, no synthetic additives.
Does Loxkin contain harmful VOCs or chemicals?
No. Loxkin is ultra-low VOC, solvent-free and contains no listed hazardous substances under EC 1272/2008.
Is Loxkin food-safe?
Yes. Once cured, LOXKIN is food-safe and suitable for chopping boards, worktops and other food-contact surfaces.
Is Loxkin safe for children, pets and skin contact?
Yes. Loxkin is naturally food-, skin- and toy-safe and is not considered an irritant under normal use.
Performance & Finish
What type of finish does Loxkin provide?
A penetrating, polymerising oil finish. It cures within the wood rather than forming a surface film, delivering durable protection while enhancing the natural grain.
Will Loxkin change the colour of my wood?
Loxkin enriches the natural tone and grain without artificial colouring or heavy build-up. Final appearance depends on timber type and number of coats.
How durable is the finish?
Loxkin provides strong resistance to moisture, wear and everyday use. Because it penetrates the wood, it is also easy to maintain and repair over time.
Application & Use
What surfaces can Loxkin be used on?
Furniture, worktops, chopping boards, cabinetry, flooring, doors, trims, turned items and children’s toys.
How do I apply Loxkin?
Apply a thin, even coat with a cloth or brush. Allow it to absorb, wipe off excess, and leave to cure. Repeat 2–3 times for best results.
How long does it take to dry and cure?
Touch dry in 4–6 hours. Recoat after 12–24 hours. Full cure is reached in approximately 3–5 days.
Do I need PPE or ventilation?
No specialist PPE is required. Basic ventilation is recommended, as with any finishing product.
Safety, Storage & Shelf Life
Is Loxkin classified as hazardous?
No. It is not classified as hazardous for transport, storage or use.
How should Loxkin be stored?
Store sealed, above 5°C and away from frost. Ideal application temperature: 18–22°C.
What is the shelf life?
Over 5 years when stored correctly.
Sustainability & Ethics
Where is Loxkin made?
In the UK, using British-grown hemp.
How does Loxkin compare to traditional wood oils?
Unlike mineral or petrochemical-based finishes, Loxkin is plant-based, biodegradable and non-toxic, while still delivering professional-grade durability.
How does Loxkin compare to linseed oil?
Linseed oil is often slow-drying and frequently treated with metallic driers. Loxkin cures more predictably without added solvents or driers.
How does Loxkin compare to tung oil?
Tung oil is typically imported and often diluted. Loxkin is UK-made, solvent-free and lower impact, with comparable performance.
How does Loxkin compare to mineral oil?
Mineral oil does not cure and requires frequent reapplication. Loxkin polymerises within the wood, creating a longer-lasting finish.
How does Loxkin compare to hardwax oils?
Many hardwax oils contain synthetic waxes, solvents and VOCs. Loxkin contains none, relying on deep penetration rather than surface coating.
How is Loxkin different to Osmo or Rubio?
Loxkin is a fully plant-based, solvent-free alternative that penetrates and cures within the wood. Unlike many hardwax oils, it contains no synthetic waxes or petrochemicals, making it easier to maintain, safer to use, and better aligned with circular design.
